3 Reasons Oil/Gas Companies Get Blamed for Climate Change (while we ignore the bigger problem – farmers!)

Spread the love

The message of climate change commonly blames the oil and gas industry.

After listening to 50+ hours of save soil content, one concept Sadhguru helped me to understand is why the focus is on the oil and gas industry, while ignoring the elephant in the room – farmers with unsustainable farming practices.

Here are the top 3 reasons why:

  • Reason #1: Oil and gas companies have billions of dollars at their disposal. Focusing the blame on them, brings in some money to support climate change and it’s easy to evoke collective anger at big oil.
  • Reason #2: Farmer economics don’t leave profit to implement healthy practices. Farmer suicide around the world is happening at an alarming rate. Sadhguru said, โ€œIn United States in the last 12 years, 50% of the farmers have not made a single dollar. The highest suicide rate among all professions in United States is (from) the farming community.โ€
  • Reason #3: Acknowledging that soil sequesters more carbon than all plant life and atmosphere, means governments must fund programs to help farmers produce healthy soil. Without voter support, governments don’t focus budgets on big problems.

The Conscious Planet proposal to define healthy soil as a minimum of 3% organic content, includes simple methods to increase soil health, and economic incentives such as: paying farmers for carbon credits and high prices for increased micronutrients in food.
